Kevlar, a strong, flexible, and versatile material, is the key component of folded bead tires, which gives them the ability to be “foldable.” Unlike wire bead tires, which are made with stiff steel wire and cannot be folded, folded bead tires can be sold compactly. When you see wire bead tires in a bike shop, they often resemble hula hoops due to their rigidity.
Folded bead tires are made from softer rubber compounds, which provide greater traction, making them ideal for wet, rough, and muddy riding conditions. However, because they are softer, these tires wear out more quickly and need to be replaced more frequently. In contrast, wire bead tires are constructed with a dual compound rubber. This dual compound significantly improves the durability of wire bead tires. The centerline of the tire, which is in contact with the road most of the time, uses a stiffer rubber compound that enhances traction. The sides of wire bead tires are made from a softer rubber, which improves cornering performance
